New Mobo conflict with older model DVD burner?

He only has one on that board. Which yes accounts for two devices. It's just physically getting them plugged in that might prove troublesome.

but if you have an external HD (even if it has a PATA interface) you connect it via usb/firewire/esata because of the external enclosure

JMS is a friend of mine. He knows that I have 2 external HDDs (one's SATA and one's IDE) in addition to the external burner. All 3 of them were simply constructed externals (that is an internal drive that was stuck in an external enclosure) He didn't know what i really wanted to put in my case - hense the confusion (i guess). I'm still keeping the laptop i have and given it only has a 30GB internal, it's portability makes me want to have at least one of those externals free for "stuff."

You should probably just use the SATA one in the new computer then :)

oh well, as long as you have 2 or less IDE devices then it will work
sata >> pata (imo)

oh, entirely. My IDE HDD is the one i've been editing on for the last few years, but i'm going to just make that a portable media storage device after i build the system. Any more HDDs in this thing will be SATA... the MOBO can support 6 of them, so money is the only issue there... and heat if you want to get down to it...
