Opinions on ViewSonic widescreen LCDs

Post by Jnzk » Sat Feb 04, 2006 9:49 am

My not so trusty 19" Samsung CRT is showing worrying symptoms and I'll have to replace it sooner or later. I've had to replace this monitor three times in 3.5 years, so I don't trust the brand much anymore. :P

Anyway, I've been looking at ViewSonic widescreen LCDs, namely the 19" model VA1912wb and the 20" model VA2012wb. I'm thinking of buying a TwinhanDTV Cab-CI tuner card and use the display as a TV. The monitor should also be good for DVDs & gaming and sufficient for video editing. I would like to hear from people who own these displays or have alternative suggestions.

I was looking at the 20" model over at Costco this weekend. The price is good ($400), but I couldn't convince myself to get it. It wasn't hooked up so I can't comment on video quality.

One thing I noticed is that it doesn't weigh as much as other 19"-20" LCDs. About 1/3 less (6 lbs) according to specs. I think they're using all-plastic in the frame and stand - rather than metal like the Dells and Sony's that I've used. That might make the Viewsonics more vulnerable to abuse, although easier to mount on a wall.

Alternatives...maybe the Sceptre 20" 16x10. Costco had those for $380 last month. A friend of mine liked them enough to buy two. But I haven't seen them or used them myself. One thing he doesn't like: the brand nameplate on the front is lit by LED's. It's large and flashes red when the unit is in standby mode.
