how do you RIP? using adobe premiere

hey i'm a new user to adobe premiere, and i've never ripped a dvd in my life. what i really wanna know is, are there several different ways to rip dvds? do you need a certain program? do you need a dvd drive? can you connect from a player to your computer?

i think maybe the best way i can get these questions answered is if those of you who do rip, just tell me in specifics what YOU do.
