Does the Biostar K8VHA Pro have a 48bit LBA-compatible BIOS?

Post by the Black Monarch » Sun Mar 07, 2004 7:38 pm

I've already downloaded XP Service Pack 1 and edited the Windows registry, but my computer still won't recognize more than 128 GB on my 250 GB hard drive. According to the folks at Western Digital (even though my HD is a Maxtor), the only other requirement for breaking the 128-GB barrier is that my BIOS needs to be 48-bit LBA-compatible. But shouldn't all mobos made after a certain date have this ability?

I'm confused. And on top of it all, my computer reboots itself for no reason every few hours (and no, it's not Remote Procedure Call - I fixed that. This one gives no warning at all, it's like it just cuts power to the system).
Ask me about my secret stash of videos that can't be found anywhere anymore.

Try a BIOS update, if that fails there is overlay software you can install that will allow your computer to see the space even if your BIOS does not...

I got around this by getting a cheap but cheerful Promise TX2 ultra ide controller card (even though I have a different mobo, same issue)

It was worth getting anyway for the extra ide channels.

IDE controllers, no not really. On versions of Windows NT/2K/XP you have to tap F6 during setup to install the proper driver for the card in before you install windows or else windows will not see the drives. If you're swaping from onboard to the controller you need to make sure you install the controller driver before swaping over...

I always thought that if your mobo had an ATA/133 controller you could have drives well above 137gb. Conidering the theoretical differences between the maximum size on a ATA/100 controller compared to the max on a ATA/133...well, ATA/133 can support something 120, 000 times bigger than ATA/100.

At least thats what I read...
