cheap and small lcd

Post by Quu » Thu Jul 03, 2003 5:23 pm

Hum... for those that know... i travel with a computer alot ^_^

anyway... does anybody have a line on a cheap and small lcd monitor for the video server?

it could be 7-9" for all i care... i need at least 800x600 (thought 1024x768 would be better) and small... (colour is optional... needs to have a vga plug)

basically i have an XPC with a NetStream2000 in it, and an external firewire cage with two 250 gig hard drives in it... a small keyboard and mouse... all that is missing is the display... I saw them a while ago when i went to a Retail Point of Sale computer show... beaitiful and perfect... and stupid me did not buy them at the time...

I'm looking at a magazine ad for a local store called PC Recycle. They're listing a 5" LCD car monitor for $99. It's probably a used or overstock item. These guys collect piles of used computer stuff from all around the Seattle area...and I do mean "piles". The place is a fire hazard.

Unfortunately, they don't have a Web presence, so I can't point you to any details. I know this monitor - or something like it - was used by someone to case-mod a Shuttle so that the LCD was attached to the front of the box as a second monitor. Very nice job, too. The article about it was posted a year ago on the Small Form Factor Forum, but they've changed their format and I can't find it now.

If I can, I'll swing by PC Recycle this weekend and see what they've got.

This might be interesting, too.

Someone at slashdot asked the same question: http://ask.slashdot.org/askslashdot/02/ ... ml?tid=137.

EarthLCD.com was mentioned there as a source.

That's true, but if the Netstream (or Shuttle onboard video) has a composite video port, it might work. Some of the models I saw listed at earthLCD and Excelan had VGA interfaces. It looked like you couldn't get 800x600 in a size smaller than about 8-10 inches.

PC Recycle was open today, but...either they don't know what they're handling or the ad was a come-on. What they showed me had a 5" enclosure, but only a 2.5" LCD. It was an interesting device that looked like it was salvaged from some kind of mass transit installation (they had 50-60 of them). The front face had buttons for channel and volume, plus a headphone jack. The attached electronics box had jacks for CATV and composite video and a D25 shell for...something...I don't know what.

The price was about five times too high, and the need for 24 VAC was another deal-killer.

I wish I knew where the pictures for that case-mod'd Shuttle are, the one with the 5" LCD embedded in the front of the case. The guy played DVD movies with the thing. It was something else.
