Help! I need to compress my files

Post by Chaobunny12 » Tue Feb 23, 2010 6:15 pm

I have two .avi files for a con submission, and both are nearly 5 GB. This is too big for the FTP server to handle.

Both are .avi files compressed with HuffyUV. They're 23.976 fps and 1280x720 pixels.

I just don't know how to compress them to a much smaller file size without destroing the quality.

Help please? :3

If the convention can accept mpeg4, I'd go with that instead.

I'll give it a try.

But, um, how exactly would I go about that? I'm kind of clueless outside .avi's and mpeg files.

I encoded an mp4 once about... two years ago, but that was with an older version of Zarx264gui and goodness knows where my script has gone. And are there codecs I should download?

Get the newest version of Zarx264gui here , Con's most of the time accept XviD's so you most likely can go with that too :P

Well you'll need avisynth and notepad atleast for the most part, You can always use AvsP to make your script files(drag and drop usually works).

Well I know that; I've got avisynth and all. I mean specifically what should my script look like? :3

Never mind, I just realized that Zarx264gui will make the Avisynth file automatically.

If you set the quantizer in Zarx264gui to 0, that is lossless just like huffyuv, but it should be smaller than the huffyuv. If you set it to around 10, it should be "visually lossless", and much smaller than the actual lossless one.
Also, be sure to set the audio bitrate higher than the default. Maybe even as high as it will go.

Ok, I'm getting another error:

Starting...

Done!

It won't encode my audio for some reason.

I went back to try the 1.0 version on my computer and that works fine. I'm not sure why 1.0 works and 1.3 doesn't o_O

It may have formed the import line incorrectly and tried to import the wrong thing. (maybe it got confused with your .avi.avi file extension?)

More likely it was an issue with accessing the component exes. When you unzipped it, did all 8 files make it into the same folder with execute permissions?

Maybe it is too much t-ecchi-e, but just as hint, thats what I'm used to do with large avi files to compress to mp4, in order:
0) only if VirtualDub doesn't like the avi: I'll do the avs
1) open avi (or avs) with VirtualDub, save separate audio stream, direct stream copy.
2) then encode MPEG4 (ffdshow, MP4V, my bitrate of choose, 1-pass average bitrate[maybe you want 2pass, 2nd int])
3) Audio stream, convert to AAC with your converter of choose
4) Yamb , ill put the two streams and make the mp4
5) done

This is not an all-in-one solution but I found I lose less time doin this way than trying to let other tools working as I want.
