Problems with compressing to a small size

Post by Altrouge » Sun May 04, 2008 9:04 pm

I've been following the guides on this site (specifically A&E's Technical Guides to All Things Audio and Video mk 2) pretty well, but when I tried making a first pass with XviD through VirtualDubMod, my AMV came out at 139MB.

I thought that was weird, and the second pass didn't really help either. I had to set the target file size to about 25MB just to get it to be around 70MB...>_> (With the quality drastically reduced, of course).

I'm not really sure if I'm doing something wrong, or if I'm just not filtering enough. Is it suggested to lower the frame size a bit to help reduce the filesize? Thanks ^.^

Are you compressing your audio?

Uncompressed audio can take up quite a bit of space.

Ah, no I didn't. I don't think the guide told me how to put the audio and video together (I suck at Avisynth), so I just exported it uncompressed.

Do you know the syntax for putting audio and video together? That'd probably fix my problem XD

By the way, is compressing the audio really going to save me that much space?

If the audio is uncompressed, then yes, it can take up a decent amount of space. I have a 3:32 second song and it takes up 35.6 MB.

I have no idea about the actual syntax for an AVISynth script, which is what it sounds like you're looking for. I just use Vegas to compress my audio for me.

If you would rather do it in Vdub though, then that I could help with. Just go to the "Streams" menu in Vdub and click on "Stream list." Click the "Add" button to add an audio stream. After you do that, right click the audio stream and click on "Full processing mode." Then right click once again, and click on "Compression." I suggest using "Lame MP3" as the compression, but that's just me.
... yea ...

Okay, thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for.

I was going to ask if I should use BeSweet or Lame, but you answered that already XD. Just curious, though, why do you suggest using Lame?

Anyways, thanks for your help; I really appreciate it :D

Two simple reasons:
1) I use Lame.
2) I don't have Besweet.

Honestly though, I don't know if one is significantly better than the other. Sorry. :\

XD That's perfectly fine. You've definitely helped me a lot anyway, and it's not that big of a deal. I'm sure I can figure the rest out on my own ^_^

in virtualdub mod go to "streams"->"streams list"->right click the stream and choose "full processing mode" -> right click again and choose "compression" -> then choose "Lame MP3" -> and a bitrate 192 kbps or smaller.
