VDubMod Error

Post by Cheesethief » Fri Mar 21, 2008 7:56 am

I'm trying to compress my first ever AMV (yay for me). I'm trying to follow the guidelines I found via a-m-v.org, but I'm getting an error with VirtualDubMod when trying to go through the process of compressing the file (it's big too, over 800 MB).

When I rendered the project (through Vegas 7), I got an error message that read:

Virtual Dub Mod Warning
Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'dvsd' (unknown).
Virtual Dub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable. Only 'Direct stream copy' is available for this video.

I can only assume that I screwed up somewhere. I'm not very technically minded, so please limit any responses to simple answers please.

Otherwise, the video looks great! I've wanted to make an AMV forever, and finally did it. Now, if I can just shrink it down a tenth of its current size, I'll be happy.

re-export from vegas using these settings (get there by pressing the "custom" button:

that new file should easily go into Vdub XD

you do not want to try compressing to divx/xvid directly from Vegas, the results will be a lot poorer quality..

you're missing a dv codec, which is what vegas used to render your file.
That's why vdubmod is complaining.

the panasonic dv codec is free and will stop vdubmod from complaining

Jadd's method should work too

Thanks for the reply! Jaddzia's fix was just what the doctor ordered. Now I have another issue.

When I do the first pass, my file comes to 112 MB. A little on the big side, but it should compress a little more during the second pass, right? I followed the "how-to" guide's inputs and my second pass was...112 MB. Huh.

An interesting note, the how-to says that I should get multiple quantizer bars during my second pass, but I'm still only getting two, one that's channel two and another on four. If it makes a difference, two is blue, and four is green.

Thanks for all the help so far. Hopefully, I'll get the video 100% soon, and I can upload it!

**Edit**

After reading another post on roughly the same subject, I see that lots of action plays a role in the AMV's size. If that's the case, it could be the cause. I have a fair amount of action and a lot of wipes (if that matters). The anime I'm using is also a high-quality anime as far as video goes (The Place Promised in Our Early Days - if you haven't seen it yet, go find it. Seriously, like NOW).

I used the Xvid frame calculator to figure out my "estimated" filesize, and it's compressing as I type this. (Though it's estimated file size is 113 MB :( ) We'll see.
