Need to reduce DV-AVI file size
Is there any way to do this? (I've been reading guides, searching forums and screwing with vdub and avisynth all night.)
When I export lossless avi from Vista's WMM, the file size is huge. How can I reduce it so as to post it here?

Btw, I already tried virtuldub and mod, and they seem to completely suck in Vista, so I need something else. (Huge file size, tiny frame rate compared to AoA DVD ripper SE using LAGS.)
Avisynth apparently doesn't do this function, or else the commands are a closely held secret. (Their website returned no results for the search terms "reduce file size.")

what are you trying to do in vdubmod?
xvid should give you good results
http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/avtech/xvid.html
and avisynth doesn't have any "reduce file size" setting
applying a few smoothers with avisynth will make your video easier to compress though (ie lower filesize)

With vdubmod, I was converting vob files to, well, any kind of editable type. For the file size, the frame rate was only about 1/12 of what it should have been, and I went over all the settings multiple times.Kariudo wrote:what are you trying to do in vdubmod?

Re Xvid: If I can't find a free program, I guess I'll just stick to wmv files.

xvid is free (but a codec rather than a program)
if you got the amvapp then you should be able to see xvid on the list of codecs in vdubmod
otherwise you can get it from here
I'm a little confused as to what you're doing
have you edited your amv and need to make it under 100MB for the org?
or are you going to edit and are in the process of making your vobs usable?

Well, I was trying to see if vdub could do either of those things.Kariudo wrote:xvid is free (but a codec rather than a program)

Right now, I'm using amvapp's Dvd Decrypter to remove the protections from the dvds and store them as vobs. Then I'm using AoA DVD ripper to convert them to Lagarith avi's, and Vista's Windows Movie Maker to create a DV-AVI file.
According to what I have read here, the programs in amvapp should be able to take the place of AoA ripper, and shrink the DV-AVI file so as to be under 100MB.
Have I made a wrong conclusion? If not, what programs are supposed to perform which functions?

Thank you for the link. I read through about all of it, but it just doesn't seem to be what I am looking for. My prior hobby was game modding, and the guide overall reminds me of what that was like about 10 years ago, namely a complicated pain in the ass. With Vista and the new WMM, much of the guide seems to be either outdated or inapplicable to my setup. (Avisynth tests not working, no one program able to extract segments from vob files with or without audio, etc.)BasharOfTheAges wrote:Go from here: http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/ ... getb2.html
The post-production section seemed to have some useful info, but it was so technical I got lost in it. I'm just a thirty-something guy looking to put together the stories I get in my head, not a college age video production major.
Are interlacing and "noise" that big of a deal? If so, is there a 1,2,3 guide somewhere that tells what to do and when to do it? I find it hard to believe that the thousands of Narutard vids posted on this site were made by kids who understood all of the technical aspects covered in that guide and used all those individual programs like pros.

They didn't. They downloaded naruto footage illegally and made them in WMM.I find it hard to believe that the thousands of Narutard vids posted on this site were made by kids who understood all of the technical aspects covered in that guide and used all those individual programs like pros.

Read Ermac and Absolute Destinys friendly AMV Guide
basically all you need are the programs in the AMV App
step 1 rip your dvd
step 2 Index your vob with DGindex
step 3 Load the avisynth script DGindex gives you into Virtualdubmod
Step 4 select the in and out point frames that you want
step 5 click Save and it will make a clip you can edit with. or you can select several clips and set them to run as a batch file
step 6 Edit your video and export it
step 7 load it into TMPGEnc and it will spit out a nice pretty ".mpg"
step 8 ????
step 9 PROFIT!
