Codename Codecs

Post by [Mike of the Desert] » Sat Dec 29, 2007 12:08 pm

Hi Guys. :)
Since I can rarely use well the internet (Having a dial-up 56k at my dear, loved home..) I'm here to make -for the 10018th time, I know- the biggest question of them all.

The Amvapp 2.1 doesn't completely cover the Codecs problem out there.
And I'm here to ask.. What we (I) exactly need to play/edit everything out there?

I usually always installed the AmvApp plus what the first page of this thread says:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/48608

Like this I'm even ben able to play Flvs with Media Player. :o
But the question is.. What do you think about this?
Any clue?

If you're on Windows, the CCCP Project makes a very nice playback pack, which I use in place of the installs recommended by this somewhat outdated guide.

On OSX, VLC is my player of choice, and has all of the needed decoders built-in, so there's nothing else to install. You can get it for Windows, too.

If you are looking for a CCCP like plugin pack for OSX then I recommend
http://www.perian.org/

I am not knocking VLC (although I prefer MPlayer), but you have to admit FrontRow is nice.[/url]

With the additional focus on editing, the CCCP alone isn't sufficient. The version of ffdshow it installs is stripped down - it only contains the DirectShow decoder, not the VFW interface (hence the increasing number of complaints that AVIs will open fine in WMP but fail to load in VDub).

In all seriousness, combining one of the daily ffdshow-tryouts builds with Haali's Media Splitter will probably cover just about everything. You'd still need to install Xvid 1.1.3 to do encoding, of course, but otherwise ffdshow can handle most everything else - including encoding and decoding MJPEG. You might want to look for a faster MPEG-2 decoder, though - if that's important to you, anyway.

The vfw interface is there in CCCP's ffdshow tryouts build. Some stuff gets enabled by default and some doesn't. For those who do editing and need vfw decoders, it's figured they could change this on there own.

Anyway, I'd suggest installing Xvid and then enabling anything else needed for vfw in the ffdshow vfw decoder settings. (also switch the vfw decoder option for Xvid to use Xvid instead of libavcodec, since lavc has a one frame delay issue in vfw)

Well then, they must have started doing so once they switched to tryouts. They didn't used to before. Then again, I don't use the CCCP and never plan on doing so either, so a change like that would slip under my nose.

I think it's surely better to have those two (FFD and Halli's) then all the bunch I usually install, but I could't find any download link for the second.. ;\

Aye, Haali's Splitter:

ffdshow-tryouts (preferably one of the Nightly builds by clsid, or at least one of the Nightly builds in general):

Installing these Codecs the results are for AE:

Many "No Such AVI Compressor".

One "Missing a required PiPL" at the opening.

I want to die.
