you can´t avoid the guides. That´s a fact. However don´t force yourself with the guides. Take your time and work with them step by step.
You´ll learn it really fast. Trust me and even advanced people always take a look again into them to get info. They´re the bible.
Ok short overview for good visual quality:
1. Use DVDs
2. Make them progressive in the right way
3. Clean them up with Avisynth
-Alright. Than render out the stuff in a looseless codec. 2GB is just a normal file.
