MTS convert to edit?

What would be the best format to convert my MTS files into?

I have Xillisoft Ultimate, but the only decent file I've found so far is MP4 AVC H264. Now this file won't work for editing, as I've noticed tons of bad things can happen with Xvid and DivX files. MP4 files seem to be along those same lines, so I'm looking for a good format that will work for MTS on editing.
