I know this has been asked before so ill even take a link to a previous topic.(i know its prolly mentioned in the guides somewhere..but i really dont wanna read it all over again when im not even using avs files..i just need to know how to make them smaller.)

i have .avi's and they keep freezing in Premiere, (or just showing black or lagging alot) so i thought i would try and make a smaller sized version of my files. so i ran them thru virtualdub using the huffy compression thing and putting the image size at like 320x280. and i get a 3gb file! i dont understand it. i ran a 300mb and get a 3gb back??

can anyone help?

Huffy, as a lossless compression scheme, will produce large files.

Your problem was not file size. Your problem is two-fold. First, you're trying to edit with fansubs or other downloaded anime. That's not going to produce good results, period. Second, you're trying to put this downloads into an editing program directly. This is also not going to work.

If you want to understand and fix your problem, start reading.

In short, be prepared to use large amounts of HD space.

actually the ones im trying to do aren't downloaded...they were originally VOB's the a friend of mine compressed into .avi...

im very aware that dvds are a better way to go.

so the only thing i got out of that link was to use Lagarith?

That's little different and no better. If you want to edit from source, you really need to have it in some lossless format. Which format is your choice, but lossily compressed source can crash editing progs and wreak havoc on your exports by being less than frame-accurate.
