Newbie Looking for a guide for beginners

Post by Tsukasa_dothacker » Thu Dec 12, 2002 2:10 am

Hello all. I am new to the board but I have visited AMV a couple times in the past. I collect music videos (almost 1200) and discovered what you call Anime music videos, but I call them Homemade Music videos because they're not all Anime. I have videos using video from popular Anime titles, as well as video games and movies.

It's been about 2 years, I'd say, since I saw the first one and I cannot even remember what it was. Anyway, just a couple weeks ago I just watched my first Anime series. (I had never really been a fan of Anime in general.) The series was .Hack//SIGN and I was blown away. I can totally relate to one of the characters as you can guess from my Screen name and all in all, the series was unlike anything I had ever seen.

Now I would like to make an Anime music video for it. I have the entire series in near-DVD quality (subtitled English, which is acceptable by me for my 1st project) AVI format. I have the song in mp3 format and it is CD quality. I have high speed DSL access in case I need additional software, and I have Adobe Premeire 6.5, though I haven't really gotten into it very much.

Anyway, is there a good how-to guide for beginners that reccomends some basic, easy to learn with software, that someone who has never worked with video editing can learn how? I am highly adept with computers and I think if I had some kind of guide to get me started, that I could be very good.

As for distribution of the final product (not to get ahead of myself) does AMV host? If not, I am not willing to pay for server space as I'm not getting paid anything to do this (nor will I solicit payment). However, I do have KaZaA and will share it there no matter what. I use KaZaA to download and to share the AMV's I have now.

Thank you in advance for your reply if you can help me. I hope I posted this in the right place.

Greetings, and welcome to the board and the world of AMV creating. For better or worse, we really don't have a guide here on general use of Premiere. The best way I know of to learn it is to have someone who knows show you. Barring that, there are a number of good books that will walk you through using Premiere and the other programs we typically use (Photoshop, AfterEffects, etc.). Do a search on Amazon or Half.com and you'll likely see a number of them. There were several good After Effects books mentioned in another thread here a day or so ago, and I know a number of the same style books are available for Premiere.

As for the mechanics of AMV creation outside of general usage of Premiere and the likes, there are a number of guides available here on the 'org to walk you through ripping footage from DVD (if you have them), compressing and cropping and the likes, and even subtitle removal. Most of the additional software we use can be found at Doom9's site.

If all else fails, just start fiddling with Premiere until you can get a book or two. It is decently intuitive, and you should be able to figure out at least some of the basics. You might also try doing a Google search on something like "Adobe Premiere Tutorial" or the likes.

Most of us will tell you that using DVD footage is the best for quality, but for cutting your teeth on the programs, I don't see any problem with using whatever you want to.

If you have specific problems, this forum is the place to ask about general problems not specifically related to a particular computer program, and the Video Software Help forum would be the place to ask questions about specific things in Premiere or the likes. Good luck!
