actually, avi is one of the best.

however...since many codecs can output avi files (.avi is a container, not a format such as .wmv) you need to be careful which codec your footage is encoded with.

avi files encoded with divx, xvid, or similar codecs are not meant for editing

your files are indeed avi files, but your problem is that they are encoded with xvid (making them xvid-avi's)

given your other thread...I'm pretty sure that you're using fansubs (which is highly discouraged...but sometimes there is no way around using fansubs)
if the dvds are avaliable in your area, please support the anime companies and buy the dvds (oh yeah...your footage quality will improve too)

if you want to use that footage, you'll have to re-encode it.
look here to find out how

No, they ARE .avi. They're just encoded with XviD.

Technically, WMV is a codec and a container format*. There is a version of Windows Media Video (WMV) - codec version 9 (aka. WMV3), that is VfW (Video for Windows) compatible (more specifically, VCM) and as such, is able to be stored in an AVI container. Previous versions (WMV7 and WMV8, aka. WMV1 and WMV2, respectively) were more proprietary and generally didn't play well in non-WMV/ASF containers.

* to be more accurate, the WMV file format is an ASF (Advanced Systems/Streaming Format) container with a .wmv file extension.
Having trouble playing back videos? I recommend: Image

AVI is like a box that your actual video goes on. DivX/XviD is just one type of video that goes inside the box.

There are lots of codecs you can edit in. Do you have a big hard drive? Try putting Huffyuv or Lagarith "inside the box."
