noob to vegas 6.0 and I need help.
yes I did read the vegas guide but it didn't fix my problem.
you see when I import an .avi file it just won't play it.
do i have to change some settings or what?
then again complete noob.
my friend told me this was a good program so I'm trying it out.

depending on the codec it will or will not play. avi is just a container and vegas will not read every avi file. i'm guessing you are working with divx or xvid witch will not import in vegas.. though there is a way to get them to work but it is not reccomended to edit with those codecs so i will not list how you can fix that.. plus it would take a while to find the information on it.
best bet is to convert them to huffyuv or legarith using virtualdub/virtualdubmod.

listen bum, a lot of people don't have it magicly work.bum wrote:So is my copy of vegas magical or are you just pretending to know what your talking about?x_rex30 wrote:depending on the codec it will or will not play. avi is just a container and vegas will not read every avi file. i'm guessing you are working with divx or xvid witch will not import in vegas.
when i first started using vegas on my laptop on the navy vessel I was on it worked perfectly without a problem.. i don't know what causes the problem but sometimes by default it doesn't work even when you have all the right codecs. i've seen many times a topic is made about someone complaining about the issue that it doesn't work and getting many replies with people saying they have the same problems then have tech people come in and just say flat out it does not work.. I never see anyone say "hey, it works for me" there are times when you and other people get it to work but in a lot of cases it doesn't and fixing the problem is not always that easy.

Xvid and divx will not import into vegas 6 for me either, I have to use virtual dub as stated and compress with a different codec to change the divx or xvid to get it to work, I really don't know why, wmm is free program and it will run dixv but vegas won't at least not on mine. It seems that the codec that works with wmm would work with vegas but it does not, I wonder if there is a codec that does

First solution: Uninstall your divx/xvid codecs and reinstall themoceanangel2you wrote:Xvid and divx will not import into vegas 6 for me either, I have to use virtual dub as stated and compress with a different codec to change the divx or xvid to get it to work, I really don't know why, wmm is free program and it will run dixv but vegas won't at least not on mine. Second solution: reincode the file into a codec that isn't divx/xvid
