Using an all text clip so it won't get cut off

Post by SailorWicca » Mon Apr 03, 2006 6:33 pm

Ok, for my AMV I'm making, I want to put a quote in the beginning. I just made a jpg file in Photoshop and added it into Vegas 6.0. My problem is, when I play it back on my tv, the text is cut off on the sides. >_< I made the frame size the same size as all the others, 720 x 480. I even left room on the sides and it still got cut off. Now I'm trying to squeeze the text all in the middle, without having to make the text too small.

I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas how to make absolutely sure the text won't get cut off on the sides? Is there a special way or format of doing it? Should I use a different program besides Photoshop to make it? Or what?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hmmm...I see. So about 1 inch of space on the edges? I'll give it a shot. Thanks! ^^0

Your TV cuts off sides of the image.

The basic rule is the outter 10% isn't action safe and the outer 20% isn't title safe.

So, you have run into the problem of TV overscan.

The simplest guideline I can give is to make sure that everything fits within a 640 x 480 section of the center of the image IF you make the original image 720 x 540. Then, you can resize the 720 x 540 image down to 720 x 480 if needed.

Well, I left well over an inch of space on the edges, and it was still cut off on my tv, though not as much as before. But it's like...how much farther am I gonna have to squish the text? >_<

Here's the jpg, since a visual might be better: http://quatrecastle.homestead.com/files/quote.jpg

I thought I left plenty of space. :/

Sorry for the double post but...

Just to note, the rest of my AMV is in widescreen format because fullscreen sucks. >XP

That is WELL into the TV safe range, image or title safe. Wow, your TV must overscan a lot. Are you outputting this to the TV from your computer? Or from a DVD?

Since you're using Vegas...along the top edge of the preview window there is an icon that looks like a grid or crosshatch. Click that and a pair of dashed-line rectangles will be superimposed on the preview video. These will not render; they're just there to guide your placement.

(If the grid shows instead, use the arrowhead next to the grid icon.)

If you're just using simple text, you might want to try the Vegas text generator. It has enough features that you won't need to keep going back to Photoshop.
