video playing problems

Post by Gallup » Sun Feb 05, 2006 10:49 pm

Since the creation of the quick comment thing i have discovered something odd. It seems that a few people have problems playing my vids. They are all encoded using XVid and play nicely not only on my machine but the machines of my friends. On my laptop, however, when I open the file the vid won't start playing. I am assuming that this is the problem other people are having as well. instead Media Player will shut back down. I know this is not a problem with the vid itself cause my main comp will play it, but after searching for what the could be causing this playback problem I am at a loss. Just to let you people know i made my vid using Video Studio 9.0. If anyone else has had a problem like this please let me know. I would really like to fix it if I can.

I forgot to mention that if I open my vid using the DIVx player on my laptop the file will open and play correctly.

In other words, Windows Media Player 9/10 is only good for playing back .wmv files. I've personally found that WMP 6.4 (mplayer2.exe) is MUCH better to use if you are tied to Microsoft products. I'd recommend VLC except that my copy/installation doesn't remember the volume settings and resets to the 50% default every time I start it. :(

What? If you have the proper codecs installed, your AVIs will play just as well on WMP9 as they do on WMP6.4; if you don't, then they won't play on either one of them.

But I have noticed that WMP9 does seem to handle WMVs better than WMP6.4, yes.

On a different machine, with ffdshow installed, WMP 9 and 10 would just crash if I tried to play anything that went through ffdshow unless I disabled most of the support in ffdshow. WMP 6.4 played fine.

On this machine that I'm using right now, WMP 9 sometimes will freeze when trying to open an AVI file, or take a freaking looooong time to do so. Even then, sometimes it will de-sync audio and video (rarely, tho). I'm pretty sure disabling ffdshow will fix it since I'm pretty sure it never did that before installing ffdshow, but that is not much of an option. :(
