Need advice on cleaning footage from badly-made DVDs

Post by BrennaCeDria » Sat Jan 21, 2006 1:22 am

Specifically I'm trying to find anyone that's successfully cleaned up Nadesico footage and is willing to share their method, but anyone that has suggestions for my problem is more than welcome to toss them in.

I've got the (original?) ADV box set of the Nadesico series, I'm having a time with these DVDs. I've been working through the guides (mostly VicBond's DVD guide but also AD&Ermac's A/V guide) and attempted every method of deinterlacing/decimate/etc listed and the best I can get is an slightly blurry, very jumpy, and EXTREMELY un-editable mess. Even after all of this, there's STILL those pesky lines from the interlacing on a huge number of the frames (although not as many as when I started). I sent an email months ago to the editor of the cleanest Nadesico vid I've seen, and was told this (in reference to the horrible first pressing of the DVDs by ADV):
So I ended up re-animating the marority of the AMV by taking a few key frames I could clean up... and then recreating the animation with after-effects. So that was the first step to evading a good part of the quality problems... however it did take longer then it would had too if I had clean footage as my source... but I was very determined to complete this video idea.
I don't have After-Effects, and I'm not sure I would know how to do this if I did have it, so if there's ANY other way people have encountered to get around issues like this it'll help. If you need anything from me to help describe the problem--my avisynth scripts, my Vdub settings, whatever--let me know. I'm willing to do pretty much whatever to get this help and get a decent, non-FF video made finally.

Not that I myselft will likely be able to help you, but for those here that can, it's usually very helpful if you post your script and provide either a detailed explaination or a screen cap of the video results you've been getting. Best of luck to you.

I'm trying to work through these different filters, but it feels like Nadesico was deliberately made to thwart them :p I'm taking some screenshots now of a few different issues I'm having that are rolling up into the whole problem. Or, if anyone has too much time on their hands, I can AIM my best output clip to them along with it's script if they wanna go a little more hands-on.
