Another Mpeg-2 question that I hope gets answered this time

Post by MousePotato » Fri May 20, 2005 3:18 pm

Ok, If your reading this and havn't red my previous mpeg2 question then plz fell free to take a look and help me out. Anyway, here's my new question: How much quality will be lost if I run an Uncompressed RGB AVI to a main concept mpeg-2 mpeg-1 layer II audio and then process this mpeg through AVIscript to crop the video drop off on the sides and then re-mpeg encode it? If your saying to yourself, "that's stupid, why not script the uncompressed avi instead and only mpeg 2 encode once?" Wel, like I said; read my last post regarding MPEG 2's and you'll see why Im attempting this.

Thanks

I'll try to adress both questions if I can.

Yes, you will lose quality going to mpeg and recompressing.

The most likely reason for the freaking out and frame flashing is that uncompressed files contain so much data, your hard drive simply can't deliver it fast enough to play it back at the full frame rate, and some skipping is taking place while the system tries to catch up to where it thinks it should be.

Even with a really fast SATA hard drive, like a 10k rpm Raptor, playing back uncompressed video is a "sometimes" thing.

Probably the best thing to do would be to just go ahead and encode it, and then watch that version to see if it came out ok. If you want to make that go faster, just to see if it plays right, you could do a medium-quality, constant bitrate, single pass encode just to check. (something like xvid or mpeg2 at 3000kbps or so)

It's not like your uncompressed master will dissapear after you try a test encode, so I'd suggest simply paying close attention to all the important settings like framerate, etc, and just going for it. If something's wrong, then you can go back and figure out what it is after giving it a try.
