Which Test Pattern Looks Best?

Post by Qyot27 » Sat Feb 05, 2005 8:48 pm

For part of the video project I'm co-ordinating, I needed a TV Test Pattern that was used in the 1980s. I managed to find an image of one but it had problems (such as compression artifacts and color bleeding). Since I couldn't find a high res copy of the image, I decided to restore it myself (pretty much from scratch).

I'd like to know what the opinion is regarding which of the two I prepared is the most appropriate. One of them has the colors of the original test pattern, and the other one has the colors that were located in the defaults in Paint, but are the closest to the originals as possible. The second one (with Paint's defaults), is brighter than the other one.

Here's the Original Pattern:

Here's the Dull Color Reconstructed Pattern:

and Here's the Bright Color Reconstructed Pattern:

The bright colors will die when you compress the video. The dull will be better.

(recalls what my old TV looked like)

Dull looks truer to what I recall seeing, since my TV's were indeed old and the colours were faded; and since 80's is now apparently a 'classic' period, perhaps the look of an old, faded TV might look better.

And yea, the compression, too...
