feels stupid asking

Post by srocketa » Sun Jan 02, 2005 10:04 am

Hi, I really have been searching the guides before coming here o_0
I've managed it all by myself up till now but theres something confusing me. I have just made and uploaded my first amv, which I'm really fond of, but it's a wmv file, and someone tells me wmv=bad, and it should be an avi file...avi=good...
And I've been trying to figure out how to do this, I used WMM to make the amv, and it saves it as wmv...what should I do to make it an avi file? It's probably some really easy thing that I'm too stupid to figure out or has been asked before, or is in a guide and I missed it, but it's driving me crazy!
Also I've been looking at the threads and somewhere it said DO NOT save it as .wmv (oops) but nowhere says WHY wmv is so terrible...fill me in please?

.WMV is generally avoided around here because most people associate it with small, low-quality files, perhaps because of its common use in streaming video (and by people who use WMM and don't know how to get a decent encode out of it). Also, it's got poor cross-platform compatibility, and codecs like DivX, XviD, etc. compress just as well as or better than the WMV codecs. (WMV9 comes closest; anything older really doesn't have a chance.)

Anyway, you usually want to export from WMM using the "DV AVI" compression option; instructions on how to do so (and on how to then compress this huge DV file for online distro) can be found here:

Ok thankyou, I'll be sure to save as something better quality in future.

*looks up that page* that's EXACTLY the info I was looking for, thanks! ^_^

I use .WMV and i know how to encode it properly, but since im not that well known around a-m-v.org i worry that people might think that it is just a lowly bad encoded amv. Meaning people will stray from it. Is it still good using .WMV when using .avi increases the videos size, even after being compressed.
You know that life is immaterial...This is not reality...

Can wmv files play on linux or mac machines? If not then, your beter off converting to the highest quality file ya can get out of wmm and then converting that to divx/xvid in vdub.
