Converting Huffyuv to something....smaller

Post by Morghul » Wed Dec 15, 2004 8:35 am

Hey, I have the entire Cowboy Bebop DVD set and want to make an AMV or three. So, I have ripped the DVD's onto my computer and am going through every single episode with a fine toothed comb, grabbing every interesting clip I can find. Anyway, to do this, I use the virtualdub program and export using huffyuv codec. I have gone through about half the series so far (about 8 hours of work  im such a nerd) and there are a LOT of clips; about 160 and in diskspace terms, about 28GB. Yes, thats a shitload of clips. Anyway, I know I will probably only use these 2 or three times and dont want my time/effort to go to waste so I am thinking of hosting the clips on the net. I'd do this for the general good of the AMV community so anyone can come and get the high quality DVD clips they need. However, 28GB is a hell of a lot of space and will use up a lot of bandwidth and in the end cost me a lot. So I was wondering how to conver the clips to a more compressed file.

Thanks

As you say, that would require quite a bit of webspace.
And I'm pretty sure that what you're talking about is against the Forum Rules to discuss here.

1st off, it would be illegal for someone to download the DVD clips from you unless they own the DVD; and if they own the DVD it would likely be far faster to just rip it themselves. I'm say its against the forum rules too. However, there are lossless codecs that will compress better than Huffyuv, such as FFV1, CorePNG, and Lagarith. Also, make sure you are using fast recompress, this way the codecs may be able to use the YUY2 or YV12 colorspace, which is smaller than Virtualdub's default output of RGB. Your files are still going to be huge, if you manage to get a 2:1 reduction in size, you're very lucky. You'll also see a speed hit when encoding & decoding.
Lagarith: Best lossless codec ever in my completely objective opinion.

Geeze, well i'll put up a bloody disclaimer before they enter the clips area. Try to help out and you get knocked down...
Most clips are between 3 and 10 seconds, thats not a huge download, about 1-4mb each if I can get the right compression. And if I had them all sorted into categories and perhaps a small description of each it would be a hell of a lot faster than going through your entire DVD collection to find a few select clips (especially if your not sure what you want exactly), believe me.
Lots of people with DVD's dont have DVD players/burners on their computers or don't have enough space on their HDD for 6GB of raw DVD files.

Anyway, thanks for the compresion info Sir_Lagsalot.

That would be because what you are thinking of of doing (putting the clips online and distributing them) is against the org Forum Rules. It's that simple. And because of which, I'm locking this thread. Feel free to continue asking about compression, just leave out your plans/idea for public distribution of clips.
