AMVs playing out of sync

Post by Brakus » Sat Sep 11, 2004 3:20 am

I don't know how exactly this happened....

About last week when I started watching AMVs (and other video files - AVIs and MPGs), I noticed that the video and audio were playing just a bit out of sync... just enough to be noticeably out of sync. The video is slightly ahead of the audio.

I've tried playing these files in different players (DivX Player, Windows Media Player, Winamp), and I'm discovering that the videos are playing out of sync. Again, not horribly out of sync, but the video/audio is out of sync just enough that it is noticeable.

Now, I'm running a P4 1.6GHz 512MB computer with a decent video card. I haven't made any major changes to the computer's hardware in a long time. (I did upgrade my speakers but I don't think it has anything to do with the synching problem.) Would this off-syncness have been caused by something I might have downloaded? Or is there another possible explanation?

For the AVI files, try turning off any post-processing [DivX's post-processing (at least, as of DivX 5.0.5) is incredibly annoying and often times does produce lag between audio and video]. Usually the codec has a config panel where you can turn it off that you can access from your start menu or in most of the players out there.

For the MPG files, I might suggest trying to see if you can get a different splitter. I've noticed that MainConcept's splitter is really nice. Some of the codec packs come with it, but aside from those filter packs I've never seen it except when bundled with other software programs. I also don't recommend installing codec packs (or if you do, only use the bare minimum filters you need) but if there's no other option I don't know what to tell you.

I'm using a 1.0 GHz Celeron with 256MB of RAM and I don't deal with videos going out of sync anymore (unless it's some weird codec like MS MPEG4v2 that takes a bunch of memory to decode).
