playing files
does anyone have a suggestion on how to fix video playback on my computer? ive recently formatted it so i figure that could be a problem, but i cant find anything wrong with the drivers in device manager. ive tried 4 different players, winamp 3, which was my favorite, winamp 5, which refuses to play video at all, divx and it wouldnt play or was a mess, window's media player seems to play a couple files but the extension can be the same on two different files and i get two different results, i couldnt find anything wrong in properties either, and i tried playing different files from both my C and D drive, and on D, i get no picture, on C, its a guessing game on what those pixels are supposed form, most of the time. ive installed divx and xvid codec, as i assumed that might help but no noticable changes. ive run out of ideas on what the problem might be.

I'd advise against codec packs, usually, but maybe that would work.
I'd try getting ffdshow first though, if that doesn't get it... something must be screwed

i tried ffdshow and tmpeg something something, i cant remember the name off the top of my head. and it seems to be just certain mpeg files because others run fine. i tried to open it in everything and no luck, when i tried window's media player, it said codec missing so.... i tried downloading mpeg 2 codecs to no avail. im sure its not the file, it played fine before but i cant figure out why it doesnt work now. oh well. was there ever a window's update because i havent gotten the latest updates yet and this is set back to.... 2002 i think, or early 2003.

thx for the help aznfs, i found a site www.free-codecs.com that had everything i need, the k-lite pack looks like a bit much for my purposes, but theres another on the site right next to it that had everything i needed. if it isnt on here, i think it'd be a good link for those who have problems playing files.
