mkv format?

mkv format?

i just dled a video file that ends with .mkv does anyone what format that is and do i need to transfer it to avi?
i seriously never seen that format before. i did a doom9 search and got three results... didn't click on them though :lol: instead came here and posted the question.

I found it!
I found both what your looking for and the site that findes file extentions. I didn't look for the site but now that I have it agin... Anyway, here it is. Looks like this thing can play on anything. Be OS! Come on, homany people have heard of that?

mkv, is matroska video. its just a container for the video and audio, like avi. the codec it uses could be anything from xvid to real video, as it can put almost everything.

to play just assign it to your player, mpc does play it, i'm not sure if wmp can, but i think not.

In order for Windows Media Player to play that type of file, you need to download and install this:

ok media player classic plays the video but no sound help?

What video is it? Depends what sound codec was used. Usually its mp3 or ogg.

hmmm... prolly ogg ill check if i have that codec... prolly because sound forge can open my ogg files. the media play classic gives me this error ::
