moving my stuff to a different computer

Post by DDramone » Sun May 16, 2004 6:11 pm

im going to move all my stuff to my old computer cuz this one is virus and adware ridden. i need some help. im totally clueless with comuters.

what i need:

i need a way to get some video editing software on it first! i heard someone mention a free one somewere on this forum. i'd like to get WMM on it, but i have no money so i cant go out and buy it (i no, expecting to do ANYTHING big with computers without money is kinda... tough). and if i download it, i need a way to transport the program from my internet computer to the no internet computer. i tried puting instal programs on a disk once, but when i poped it in it didnt work. why is that?

i also need to get my psmplay and all that other stuff to get footage onto that computer. same problem

then i need to get some kinda media program besides winamp and an out dated version of real play.

the computer i use the internet on is an e-machine that uses windows XP. the non internet one is a gateway that uses windows 98.

can windows 98 use WMM?

no. At least not movie maker 2, which is what microsoft has up for download now. Also, I'm told the best way to transfer files between computers is via a cable, at least if you're movie a lot of stuff. Also, there are ways to remove adware and viruses from your computer without harming anything else. It should take several hours though. my dad would know some programs, I can ask him if you want.

Oh and other free editing programs: Virtualdub and Avid Free DV, both of which have windows versions I believe, though I haven't tried Avid Free DV.

WMM is only usable with 2000 and XP as far as I know, I don't think ME can use it (although one of my friends says that ME runs it...).

WMM2 requires WinXP. Version 1 shipped with WinME.

yeah, id like to get someone to reformat my comp, but then theyd know how much porn i look at  but seriously, ill probly get it done during the summer.

i REALLY like that cable idea, but im computer retarded. just what would that involve? just hooking a cable up to both comps?

also, why cant i put instal programs on a (CD) disk and just dump them on my comp? i tried doing that before, but for some reason it didnt work. if i cant do that then i wont be able to put virtualdub on the other comp. unless i do the cable thing.

For viruses: either Norton or McAfee has an online virus checker. Not sure which one, and you probably need a fast connection.

For spyware: I recommend both Lava Soft's Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy. Both are free programs. Ad-Aware is easier to use, IMHO. Usually Ad-Aware gets everything, but sometimes Spybot will pick up things it misses. Also, if you use normal Kazaa, switch to Kazaa Lite.

And you can always take the hard drive of one computer out, put it in the other computer, and copy the files you need. Just watch out for viruses (or is if virii?).
Another pointless post!

Internet Explorer dumped a ton of shit on my comp when I opened it the other day...

Otherwise, I use Norton Anti-Virus 2004, Ad-Aware, Spybot Search and Destroy and some advanced stuff that beginners shouldn't mess with.

You can take primary harddrive out of comp 1 and hook it up as a slave in comp 2 and copy over the files needed, then either format on comp 2 or put it back in comp 1 and format that way.

I need to format my 15 gig, I finally got the message saying there was too much crap on it.
