Possibilities:

Boot sector on the hard disk was trashed (re-install OS).
Loose cables (open box, re-seat cables).
Hard disk failure
Motherboard failure

First thing I'd do is open the box and re-attach the hard drive cable at both ends. Then re-install Windows. (If you need to save files off the hard drive, boot the system with a startup floppy disk.) If that doesn't work, replace the cable with a new one. Then re-install Windows. If that doesn't work, swap the hard drive for one that you know is working. Then re-install Windows on the new drive. If that doesn't work, swap out the motherboard and try again.

This happen to my computer 3 weeks ago  . It sucks, I had to replace my hard drive and re-install windows  . My computer's problem was that the hard drive needed to get replaced so it erased everything on it and that message came up. You best replace your hard drive and then re-install windows again! 8) Good Luck Man! :D

"fixboot" and "fixmbr" from the repair console usually help.

Boot with windoze installation cd (assuming it's win2k/xp), select "repair with recovery console" and use "help" to figure out how to use these commands (I don't remember now, something easy, I think fixboot asks which windoze to fix and you just press "1"..).

Warning: will overwrite any booting utilities like lilo/grub.
