I was wondering if there are any major differences in the functionality of the two programs. While I understand the reasons for such high pricing and I want After Effects, $700 is a tad steep. I want to see if 5.5, being cheaper, would be as worthwhile.
Thanks.

There isn't really a whole lot of difference between them. The biggest differences in 6 that come to mind are as follows:
WAY better text effects
Keylight plugin lets you key out stuff like greenscreens or solid color stuff with VERY imressive results
Open GL accelleration that can greatly enhance preview speed when working on 3d scenes
Video sources don't have to be in RGB format.

Hey, with your support I found the student discount for around $265, and I'm eligable. I'm pretty fricken psyched, and I would have to be to use that term. Considering I just spent $280 on some stuff (all legit, you doubtfull bastards, and I could have got Boogiepop Phantom for $50 rather than $77 at the perfectly ethical Anime corner store, but that's another story) so I might do that in a few weeks. And by weeks I mean the end of the summer. Oh, and for an actual excuse to say all this, the site is: http://www.studica.com/products/index.cfm. Happy shopping, to all the students out there.
