Surround AMV?

Post by Otohiko » Mon Feb 23, 2004 6:07 pm

Just curious about something... it's probably not the most practical thing, but something funky nonetheless.

Is this possible? And how?

The reason I got curious is that in my latest AMV, I used a stereo track from a music DVD, but just today, it crossed my mind that that DVD also has a 5.1 track included. I don't have a 5.1 system myself, and I didn't want to bother with it at the time, but I'm still curious whether or how it could be incorporated into an AMV.

Yeo, there was some top gun/macross amv released in surround sound. it's merely a matter of putting the audio in a format that supports 5 channels... AC3, AAC, or OGG vorbis being the main choices.

Ah, so it is... Suppose it's just a matter of getting the right stream out of the VOB then.

Would that create any problems for normal playback on normal computers?

That would be nice to include in some sort of version of my vid... a shame it's too long for conventions. (of course, noone said cons have to have surround sound  )

As Zarxrax, said, it's an issue of codec/container support; it'll depend on what your audience has installed if this would cause problems. There might not be any immediate change in sound depending on their speaker setup, though (5.1 is kinda hard to run from normal stereo).

And even then it's circumventable. I'd secure OGG support, or hell, even upgrade my hardware if I could get The Wasteland in 5.1 thereby.

Heh, well, that's possible. In fact, I'd do quickly it if I knew how to
1) get the 5.1 stream out and make sure it is 5.1
2) be able to edit it (well, crop at least)
3) stick it into the video
4) boost its' volume about 300%

Then you'd have that vid in 5.1, def.

I think a viable solution is to offer an extra 5.1 version of your AMV, though making the standard stereo mix your main distro copy. I'm planning on doing this for some of my upcoming vids where I have access to DVD Audio discs.

Yeah, I was thinking along those lines.

Now, the big question: Is there a sound editor that tackles 5.1 AC3 files?

Go to the Audio Encoding forum on doom9 for all the info you'll ever need including how to make pseudo-5.1 from stereo.

Ah, thanks. I'll browse it and see if there's answers. Frankly, I'm just interested in how to clip out a segment of the 5.1 track I already have; but we'll see if I dig up anything on that over there.
