Is there anyway to encode these in a different format? if you could reccomend a program that would be nice.

If you change the file extension to .asf, you can open it up in TMPGEnc and encode it in that.

Reencoding from one lossy codec to another is a bad idea. I'd reccomend against it.
So in other words, one part of the community is waging war on another part of the community because they take their community seriously enough to want to do so. Then they tell the powerless side to get over the loss cause it's just an online community. I'm glad people make so much sense." -- Tab

Well I wouldn't recommend using a lossless codec either if he isn't going to edit with it. Whether or not he uses a lossless codec depends on what he plans to do with the video.

If you want to make an avi file you can create an AviSynth script as follows and import it into vdub.

DirectShowSource("X:\Directory\of\file\filename.wmv")

You don't need to change the extension for that.
DirectShowSource("X:\Directory\of\file\filename.wmv")
You'd need to supply a framerate, i.e. DirectShowSource("path",fps=29.97)

If I recall corretly, all DVDs store footage in a lossy format. I forget what it's called. Lemme think... OH YEAH! Mpeg!

I am not sure what your point is there Izumi :|

It's MPEG-2 to be ultimately anal about it, and encoding it to any other format is most likely going to reduce the quality unless the MPEG-2 source is dirty and you run filtering on it to clean the image...
