I really shouldn't have seen that

Ok, I went and downloaded Koop's Euphoria, watched it, and of course was completely impressed with the technical aspects of it. I saw something in his video that I have seen in several videos, and I'm curious as to how he did it. It's the effect in which he passes boxes over the background scene, and in the boxes you can see another scene revealed as they pass. I played with setting image mattes on clips with rectangles from titles as models, but it isn't working.

Ok, my explanation of the effect I want wasn't that clear...I want to know how to pass a shape over a video clip and show another clip in the box.

By the way, after watching Koop's video, I hate all of mine. I really shouldn't have seen that.

Track mattes aren't going to do it. Have you seen his video or the effect that I am talking about? In a track matte, the cutout that shows the video stays stationary while the video can move behind it. I want the cutout shape to move and the video behind to stay stationary.

I think I might have just figured it out. I could use some clarification on how you are using track mattes though. Good advice, but a little too concise for a nooB :) .

Add a keyframed motion or transform effect to the track matte. Instant moving track matte. ;)

don't hate your own work after watching someone elses video, it wont help you. learn from your past videos and learn from other's (but don't copy  ). My best guess is to try out what klinky and Zarx said. but also test someout yourself. to be honest, if your new don't try and anythign too hard right away. take your time to get it right :P
