DVD Ripping

As a long time watcher of AMVs, I've occasinally tried to create my own, with miserable failures ala Failed Experiments In Video Editing. A friend of mine was recently addicted [by me] to anime, and wants to create his own AMV. He's got all the footage he wants on DVD, and now needs to know how to convert them to a format he can work with on his computer.

Advice? Links? Programs?
