Mjpeg probelm when using premire...

Post by Lord Rae » Sat Mar 29, 2003 2:36 am

I'm following the guide... as this is my first attempt at dvd ripping and editing. But I think my dv500 is complicating things here...

the mjpegs I encoded and brought into premire do fine in the preview screen... but when placed on the timeline they show nothing but black video. Rendering does nothing. as does changing the compression type for the project settings. I made sure I was using video for windows as opposed to the normal dv....

any ideas?

check your timeline just to make sure the video track you're dropping them on is turned on.

also check that there isn't another video track dominating it into black for preview.

you're using morgan right?

morgan? o_O

I'm using the picvideo codec as prescribed in the all things video and audio guide by ermac and ian roberts...

yeah its on the right video track and its turned on... I've been editing with premire for over 3 years.... so I don't think I've suddenly lost my understanding of how the tracks work.. but I realize I didn't make that clear....

when I use one of the avs files that I used to make the mjpeg files they show up fine in the timeline and in preview... its just the mjpeg files that don't show up... For example I laid two tracks (1 avs and 1 mjpeg) side by side on video 1a. the avs shows up fine post rendering.. while the mjpeg remains a black video with nothing... no render marks, no attempts to play it at all...

I think it may have something to do with project settings but I've peaked my understanding in premire of those settings.

No offense, but always simple things first. ;p

where did the original source vid come from?

project settings in premier don't really matter until you goto render/preview it out, and then they only matter if you're

a: applying a special effect
b: fade transitioning with rubberbands
c: the source clip doesn't match the project output settings format

so try & check the file specs of the AVS stuff youre MJPEG-ing, and set your project settings to match whatever that is. If you're scripting it yourself, then fine.

To be honest i'm not sure what could be causing that.

the source is dvd footage.. ripped with smartripper...

actually first let me apologize.. i just reread my post and I sounded very bitchy... sorry bout that...

then with the m2v I've made d2v files using dvd2avi... then avs files. then using the avs files I made mpjpegs for quick editing.. when I'm done (if I can ever get started) I'll switch out the mjpegs for avs...

as for matching source and mjpeg options that was the second thing I checked after checking to make sure that the avs works fine..

I'm clueless...

maybe if the mjpeg didn't work... then I'd say I screwed up along the way...

since the mjpeg works fine in premire, media player, virtual dub, ect... I'd say its something funky with premire...

...You can't.

M2V = MPEG-2 Video

You can't rip VOBs into M2V files, unless you take it into TMPGEnc, which is a fucked up thing to do.

I got the m2v straight from smartripper...

in smartripper check the video track only... change direct stream copy into demux to extra file (you'll see both options on the right..demux is in the middle).

then in the settings tab change key check to once and set it for max filesize.

when it rips the video you'll have a m2v file and some others with wierd extensions and a d2v file... delete the d2v file since its not a real one (not one that will work anyway) and the other files aren't neccessary either... maybe the info.txt file should be kept...

then you just take the m2v file into dvd2avi and your on your way... I guess I can skip the mjpegs and edit straight m2v/avs files... its just gonna take much longer...
