What's the difference between DVD-R and DVD+R?
I've been wondering about this since some drives accept DVD+Rs only and some only DVD-Rs.
And also please list the difrence between DVD-RW and DVD+RW if that matters.

damn....those numbers are TOO close. what to do....DVD-R is a non-rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 88% of all DVD Players and DVD-ROMs.
DVD-RW is a rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 69% of all DVD Players and DVD-ROMs.
DVD+R is a non-rewritable format and it is compatible with about 84% of all DVD Players and DVD-ROMs.
DVD+RW is a rewritable format and is compatible with about 70% of all DVD Players and DVD-ROMs.

Or, just get one that supports both. I think Toshiba makes a really nice one that does both +R and -R.

Not necessarily, and not necessarily. And I suggest you post links to your evidence for making such a claim.RadicalEd0 wrote:DVD-R is cheaper and better

I'm very happy with my Sony DRU-500a all-format drive.
I'm finding pretty good prices on both 2x DVD-R and 2.4x DVD+R discs, now that 4x discs are appearing. The Sony seems to like the +R discs slightly better, and I appreciate the modest speed boost over the 2x discs.
My DVD players both play either kind of disc with no trouble, so I can't comment much on compatibility.
DVD+RW does have built in error correction capabilities that all three other variants lack, so I choose to use that for really critical backups that I want to last a long time.
That said, if price is your primary issue, it seems hard to beat some of the cheap DVD-R only drives out there, but if you have the bucks, a multi-format writer like the Sony gives you the most flexibility for finding what works with your set-top player, and for taking advantage of whatever bargains on media you are able to find.
