I'll have you know! Once I made an AMV and was going to release it in VCD mpeg 1, RV9, and ogm w/xvid+vorbis.
Then YCSTR told me it sucked, and I realized that it really.. really did. :|

At least trythil thinks it's up to the content distributors to fuel new formats too :P think of how many thousands of people watch amvs.
Anyway, we all need to release hentai videos in mp4 or mkv.

Why hasn't mpeg2 got a mention? I mean, I understood like, maybe a grand total of 25% of the shit you just spouted, tab, so I'm not gonna be much of a productive input on this discussion, but...

Christian, why do you say mpeg1 looks shit at any bitrate? I've seen some absolutely gorgeous mpeg-1 files (okay, what you said about the audio is dead right, it doesnt sound particularly good until its above 224kbps) at equivalent bitrates to DivX/XviD encoded AVI's that look horrendous. Okay, fair play, the codecs available for mpeg-4 compression are obviously gonna have the upper hand, but theres still hope for MPEG.

But yeh, what about MPEG-2? DVD uses the MPEG-2 standard, and I must say I've never ever seen an AVI that can beat a DVD video stream.

BTW, I'm a total amateur at this (not a n00b, theres a difference) and I don't understand much of the nitty-gritty of video, only the basic practical stuff. So if this post is an embarrasment to read, then just disregard it, and flame me as you see necessary.

I once thought it would be a good idea to push forward now containers. I mean, lots of people read the guide, lots of people download amvs.

Then I realised that there's a huge amount of people out there who just can't deal with the idea of something that doesn't end in avi or mpg. People who, if they see a matroska or ogm file they would just not download it because they'd presume it to be nonesense.

Of course, there's the argument of 'Why would I want that person to see the video anyway?' but really its more a case of not wanting to alienate any of my viewers when I really don't have to.

you do have a very valid point there, AD. It is a case of consumer laziness, people need their AVI/MPEG container fix to stay happy. I mean, yeah, its a stagnant pool of ignorance, but they don't seem to care.

Me? Well, I don't really care what format the video is in, as long as i can quickly and easily get ahold of the codecs I need to watch it.

That said, I still have that .rmvb file I can't play...

Just rename it to .avi and tell them they need a "codec" called the matroska splitter.

Seriously...I bet that if MJ had released "Moneyshot" in an MPEG-4 container or whatever, you'd have a substantially greater audience capable of playing back videos in that format...

One problem with that: the Matroska site recommends you use Gabest's splitter, and the downloads from Gabest's SF site don't seem to include any convenient installation method. (All you get is the DirectShow module, and it takes a lot more than that to get things working.)
