If the community switched to h.264 I wouldn't hesitate to follow suit.
but as it stands now, I'm not well-enough known to make a real push for it.
it'l probably gain more popularity as blu-ray or HD-dvd does.
Whenever it happens, I'm ready for it. I can encode and play h.264 files
I even have an x.264 version or my latest amv ready for distribution
(if only I had hosting to make an indierect or direct link...)

From the one h264 video I released I've never seen a comment like that. I have had a few say. "I can't see the video". Most of the comments I get for that video are "best quality of eva ive ever seen", or "EXTREMELY high quality.", and "Excellent video quality.", etc, etc.. always about the quality. There are so many eva videos out there, I find this to be a great compliment.aesling wrote:I prefer h264 because the quality is way better, but when I released my video in it I got such helpful QC's as "h264 sux!!!" so next time I'll probably release both Xvid and h264 versions. Of course, I can sympathize with not having a computer with good enough specs to play h264 well

Good and easy GUI for x264 compressions can be found easily enough these days, if one had the inclination to get on the bandwagon. Hardware is a seperate issue. I personally am going to tend more towards encoding my videos in x264 now for several reasons, most importantly of course is the quality issue. Other reason I see is that if no one or only a small number of people show some interest in it then the "community" will be even less inclined to change to this standard. This codec is going to stick around I think, so I say better start learning it.

I use an h264/vorbis/mkv combo. My target is about
3-4MB per minute of video. Plays OK, looks OK, users
with slow connections should be happy.
However, I have a hunch that people who see videos
smaller than 20MB automatically assume it must look
crappy. While I don't expect visual greatness from a
15MB 4-minute AMV, I think reasonable looking
results can be obtained.

Personally I haven't seen a reason to move to h264 yet. It has smaller files and better quality but on the downside many don't have the hardware/software capable of playing it.
The space savings is a very minor benefit. We're dealing with a few minute long videos here, not episode length fansubs. In the age of broadband and 500 gig HD's I find the difference between downloading a 50 meg video and a 40 meg video to be so trivial I barely even note it. Either way it takes me longer to read the video description than it does to download the damned thing.
The quality concerns are nice but xvid more than meet what I consider acceptable quality. Thanks to people cleaning up their footage and the fact that xvid is good enough to not ruin that cleaning up I have quite a few videos on my HD that actually look better than the offical anime DVD they used as source. When the compression is good enough that it can look better than the actual source (assuming people clean up their source) I consider it more than good enough.
And on the bright side, with xvid I don't get people bitching they can't watch the video, that they have to close every other program to be able to see it, idiots asking how to play it, etc. h264 unfortunately has all of those, at least for the moment.
So I'm sticking with xvid for now. The next time I have a video long enough the space saving is a real consideration I'll move to h264 but for a three minute joke? Fuck it, it ain't worth the effort yet. Once more people have the ability to play it without someone holding their hand or without their machines dying then I'll look into it again.
