If you're going to use unconventional formats you can always include stereo and surround tracks, like DVDs do. Though most decoders that support 5.1 downmix for you. You've got format choices.
RM: RA
WMV: WMA
AVI: AC3
OGG: OGG, AC3
MP4: AAC
MKV: all of the above

That kind of normalizes your support field by eliminating the usual AVI:MP3 defacto. The top two will do you the best in that area. The third is a gamble and the rest are for idealists.

As far as editing goes you can do simple cuts and stuff with dspguru's tools.

Hmmm

I haven't tried using surround sound music and don't plan to. However, I've downloaded some anime subs that used AVI:AC3. I had to download an AC3 decoder filter (found it on sourceforge), but when I installed and configured it, it worked very nicely. Heres the link to the AC3 filter, AC3filter. Hope this helps somehow.

hmm, interesting. I'm still trying to figure out the how-to of this. There's pretty much just one main issue: I can't figure out how to extract the surround track, clip it down and actually insert it into an existing AMV. I got the software, I got the source... but I have no idea where to go with this.

I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually

Just demux the tracks with dvd2avi (Audio->Output Method->Demux All Tracks), open the 5.1 AC3 in BeSweet GUI, and either output:
A. PCM (Wave/AIFF) -- check 16 bit (Six) Mono Waves in AC3/OGG/PCM,
B. 5.1 DD-WAVE
A if you have something like Microsoft Sound Recorder and have to edit all 6 channels seperately (just write down the times for the first and it shouldn't be too bad), or B if you have something that can edit 5.1.

For scenario A:
Open notepad and write:
C:\AC3\FL.WAV
C:\AC3\C.WAV
C:\AC3\FR.WAV
C:\AC3\LS.WAV
C:\AC3\RS.WAV
C:\AC3\LFE.WAV
"C:\AC3\" obviously being the path to your new wavs, and FL\C\etc being the names of the channels (it's a good idea to keep track of them :| ) in that order.
Go back to BeSweet and open the .mux file, and just encode to 5.1 DD WAVE.

At this point case A and case B are equal. From here you can use Helix Producer/WME/BeSweet to encode to any of the formats I mentioned above, and each of the respective muxers to add it to the video. I'm skimming over the muxing part for now cause I'm lazy, so come back if you need help with that :|
Also, I believe AC3 was actually removed from BeSweet because the ac3 encoder in ffmpeg sucks ass, but that might be out of date. I dunno why it would still be in the gui :|

the ac3 encoder was updated and allowed back in but is on probation :)

It's still a little crap imo - best cheap solution is probably softencoder if you are wanting to do ac3.

I'm still considering and trying to decode what Tab recommends. This is what happens when you have the neccesary source and lack the appropriate competence. Another problem is that I don't actually have a surround system to test the results on...

Have I mentioned I'm a tech-retard? Yea...

Will try to rip and crop the track shortly, then see what happens...
