I think this goes here, but an OS question...

It's only more reliable, faster, etc. if you know what you're doing.

GNU/Linux boxes are fickle. They'll outperform and outlast a Windows box easily -- but only if you configure it properly. (Otherwise, they will fall apart.) To achieve that takes a lot of research, time (although it does take less time as you get more familiar with the system), and -- many would say -- insanity.

The same can be said for a Windows machine*, of course, but you don't hear it make the news as often with GNU/Linux machines, for some reason. Maybe it's because there's just more Windows installations out there. (I know for a fact that poorly configured UNIX boxes are not less prevalent than poorly configured Windows boxes. If anything, I'd say their numbers are about the same.)

I mean, If you want stability and security out-of-the-box, go use OpenBSD...

...but yeah. Choose whatever you want to choose, but what you do choose, be sure you know how to use it. I run Gentoo on my desktop and Windows XP on a laptop, and both run just fine.

I looked at a few linux things (red hat mostly) and I'd spend atleast a month downloading them all! Dialup is bad, and if Linux works, I might use it, I might stay with 98se, and XP might just take over (or God help my soul)... If Linux is anything like Windows (I mean the getting around it without even thinking), then I might get it...

From a user's perspective, it is nothing like Windows.

UNIX is good, and in general all the Linux distributions are good (and you don't have to download it you can just buy a CD), however if all you have ever used is Win98 then you would be in for a shock. Even though the UNIX desktop GUIs are pretty good you would still find that you have a steep learning curve.

XP is a totally different beast compared to Win98; it is much more stable and in general much more capable. However its disk and RAM needs are quite a bit heavier than 98 and while it will run fine in 384Mb you will be up against your own swap whenever you do something big or fancy - such as video editing. An upgrade to 512Mb at the same time would be advisable.

It is also worth noting that not every tool you are used to on Windows will have a Unix equivalent, and I'm willing to bet that most of the Linux users here are running dual boot computers with Linux and either XP or Win2k.

Conclusion and recommendation? Well, I'd definitely get off 98, and if you're up for the learning curve then go for a dual boot, if you're not then just XP. Both options would benefit form more RAM though.

That might be better phrased "not every tool you are used to on Windows will have a direct analog on UNIX". I've yet to find something that I can't do on a UNIX box that I can't do on a Windows machine, but sometimes it definitely requires a different way of thinking.

The converse is also true, and is the reason why a lot of us are using Linux - there are things you can do on a Linux machine that are nearly impossible to do under Windows.
