AMVApp update?

Post by dkellis » Wed Nov 15, 2006 11:56 am

I'm not entirely certain where this topic would go, now that the old Video Software General is a locked archive. Mods, feel free to move if necessary.

I've also searched the forums, and found nothing of note. Due diligence and all that.

I know I've asked this question before on the IRC channel, but I lost the answers (written down somewhere), and it's been a long while, punctuated by reinstallation of Windows. So I'll ask here again, in the hopes that an archived post on the forums will help in case I need to wipe my system (again).

Can the current AMVApp on the site be considered to be sufficiently up-to-date and problem-free now?

In other words, can I use the programs and tools included in the AMVApp as they are and still produce an AMV, or should I be looking for the new versions? If so, then which versions of what should I be using? (I think I remember something about VDubMod or some such being better in an old version than the absolute latest.)

Also, would anything in the AMVApp and default settings need to be altered so as not to b0rk something else? What I'm particularly worried about is the Combined Community Codec Pack. Past experience has shown that all the different installations from various sources tend to mess up the system quite horribly, and I'd rather not have a repeat here. (Assume a default settings installation of the CCCP, 2006-07-28.)

I don't know if someone updated it recently but I doubt it. As it is I find some of the programs need updating. Most importantly I've had to update DVD Decrypter and DVD2AVI.

The amvapp is pretty out of date, but it should still be fully functional and not cause any problems. When you install the amvapp, I would recommend that you NOT install the version of ffdshow that comes along with it. CCCP should be able to coexist with no problems.

I know I've been saying this forever, but I am currently working on an updated guide and amvapp, and its REALLY almost done now. There are some significant changes in it, and I would expect to have a beta version up in the next month or so, and a final version in a couple months after that.

I know you've been working hard on this, and I'm looking forward to it. Fundamentally, the guide itself is pretty stable in terms of production method. The main thing is updating virtually all of the programs and/or adding new ones to the tool set. And of course, any changes to the guide to reflect the updates if needed.

Good luck, take your time, and I look forward to reviewing the beta.

I know anecdotal evidence doesn't mean much, but CCCP 2006-07-28 works great on my XP SP2 machine with Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects 6.5, and the usual slew of utilities. The first two programs still function just fine.

The trick, really, is not to install multiple versions of FFDshow. They tend not to play nicely together.
