Can the 10mb/min rule really be applied to CG based anime?

Because I've gotta say, it seems really tough to do that while keeping the quality as good as possible.

I've been following the Xvid compression guide in the how-to section of this site now for a number of months, and though it gets the job done pretty well, I still occasionally read feedback from my amv's and others saying that the file size could've/should've been smaller. I've gone back and have done all the trial and error I can do, but to no avail. My 4 minute amv's still come out to be around 80~90 mb if I'm going for relatively decent quality with Xvid. And this is without using any avisynth filters at all.

So is it really fair for people to expect footage from things like Final Fantasy or any 3d anime, to always be great in quality at only 10mb per minute? Seems a bit unreasonable to me attm.

Depending on how much movement there is in the video and how complex the scenes are, it isn't unusual to have a 4 minute video to need 80MB+ for decent video quality. Especially full-frame animated CGI, since there are fewer duplicated frames that can improve compression.

You could try to use a more advanced codec like h.264. I've seen very good results with sometimes a 30 to 40% reduction in filesize compared to Xvid. Of course, the tools needed to encode and mux the resultant files are newer and less user friendly atm. My goal is to eventually use h.264 video and AAC audio in a MP4 container (or 3gp, hehe) in my future projects.

so basically it is possible...just not with Xvid. Right? lol
well thanks. Seriously. I figured as much, but I just had to get a second opinion on the issue. Perhaps someday I too will start to convert to using the .h264 codec once it become more widely accepted amongst the members on this site. Thanks for your reply.
