Fruits Basket DVD Hell - Chapter-Specific Ripping?

Post by dokool » Wed Jun 28, 2006 10:32 pm

So I'm trying to rip DVDs for Fruits Basket, and am confronted with a situation similar to what the Guide mentions about Kare Kano.

However, here's what I get in DVD Decrypter for Disc 2:

VTS_01
PGC 1 [00:00:15]
PGC 2 [02:23:54]
Angle 1
Angle 2

Obviously PGC 2 has the actual episodes. Both Angle 1 and Angle 2 have 59 chapters, whereas WinDVD only lists the Episodes as being 46 chapters. So, when I take my list of chapters from WinDVD and put it into DVD Decryptor I get... random chapters that don't at all look like the ones I'd wanted.

Anyone deal with this? Anyone know how to fix it? I'm going insane here, so help would be appriciated as I *really* don't want to have to rip the entire DVD.

Just look at the chapters by length. Assuming each 'core' part of each episode is it's own chapter, it should be fairly easy. The two c hapters that are about 10-11mins long each and are right next to each other should be one episode, minus OP/ED/Preview

Given that your assumption is wrong, that doesn't really help.

Well then what DO the chapters mark if not OP, Part 1, Part 2, ED, and Preview?

From what I've determined, the chapters are the OP, Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, 2-second blank chapter (read by WinDVD as Chapter 0), ED, 2-second blank chapter (read by WinDVD as Chapter 0), Preview.

Which means that I now have to keep track of all of these extra little chapters (which are there for reasons I can't determine).

Well, maybe work by exclusion? OPs and EDs are always just about 1:30 in length, it shouldn't be that hard to figure out that the 'meat' is what's between them.

Very short blank (black) chapters are usually there to assist in skipping through DVDs if every episode is a separate "Title". They are never marked in "Scene Selection" menus and usually never show up in chapter listings as players should ignore them. But this is not the case in Furuba since the structure is like a movie DVD instead of an episodic DVD. I believe this is due to the multiple angle feature employed by Funimation.

I'm looking at the DVDs in DVD Decrypter and I'm baffled too.

Opening it in PgcEdit gives me more info:

Oh and to clarify, the above list was for the Furuba volume 2 DVD. The same basic structure may also apply to the other DVDs. Differences would be where the layer break change occurs and how many additional "blank chapters" are at the end.

You can examine the DVDs yourself with PgcEdit. Open the DVD VIDEO_TS file on the DVD (it will throw up an error message, ignore it). Skip the BOV scan. Then find the main title in the left pane (it should have the longest duration) and double click it. The numbers you are concerned with are Chap. (PTT) and Prog. to the right of the color table. The Playback Time field is also useful. The later versions of PgcEdit also let you preview the video cell by clicking on the "play" arrow button at the far right.
