Rip or download: Which is easier?

I want to make an AMV using Evangelion and End of Evangelion. A friend of mine has the DVD's and I could borrow them and rip them, but would it be easier to just download like an MKV or OGM version (I say these filetypes because I'd want it without subtitles and raws would be pretty hard to find)? Or are those hard to convert into a digestible filetype? I know if I rip them I'll have to deal with de-interlacing with virtualdub or something.
