I've got a very weird situation when I try playing back XVid files on WMP. If I've only just opened the player then the XVid amv will usually play fine. If I've already been playing some other (differently encoded) amvs on the same player beforehand though, the XVid file will usually crash the player.
I'm wondering if it's because somehow my XVid codecs and my Haali Media Splitter codecs are mixing each other up? Or could something else be causing problems?
Possibly unconnected but... I also had a hell of a time trying to get subtitles to play from mkv files, and whenever I've tried using ffdshow it always screws *everything* up.

I think maybe there is/was conflict between certain versions of Xvid and Haali. I'm not sure which bit of software was responsible, but I can take a bit of a guess to try to help you figure it out.
I'll have to make a few assumptions, since you didn't post exactly what you have installed.
Assuming you use AMV.app, which is wonderful but getting rather outdated, here's something worth trying:
Get the latest version of- AMV.app, CCCP, A current build of Xvid (look on the Doom9 forums), and have any other VfW codecs you might use like mjpeg handy.
Uninstall EVERYTHING having to do with Haali splitter, Xvid, ffdshow, or Media Player Classic, if you've installed that. (or back up any/all avisynth filters or the like you've upgraded or custom installed from what's in AMV.app, then uninstall everything)
Either starting from step 1 or 2 below, depending on if you removed all AMV.app components or not, try the following
1) Reinstall AMV.app if needed, but disable installation of the Xvid codec and ffdshow.
2) Install CCCP with at least it's version of MPC, or both players if desired. Choose "Re-register all filters" and to use MPC as the default player for .mkv, .ogm, and .mp4 in the installer.
3) Install your fresh Xvid build.
4) Reinstall anything else not included with AMV.app that you use and might have removed during a full uninstall. mjpeg, avisynth filters, whatever.
Hopefully you have a pretty solid playback setup at this point, with non-avi files being handled by MPC, which in my experience is far superior to WMP or anything else when dealing with softsubs or any alternative containers.
The why of it all:
CCCP takes the vary latest, most up to date and proven directshow/splitter/player components and installs them without any "fat". The ffdshow build they use doesn't have the VfW parts in it, so it won't interfere with actual codecs you have installed. Their VSfilter version includes special buxfixes they got the author to make, and they have the MPC preferences already set up for maximum harmony between components upon install. It's assembled and maintained by fansubbers, there's no spyware or other crap involved.
The only thing that might break with these components installed is if you've been using ffdshow's mjpeg VfW implementation for your editing previews. If so, you may need to find another mjpeg codec that allows use as a "trial version" with a watermark, and use that instead. ffdshow's attempt at mjpeg never worked right for me anyway.
Simple version if you don't edit AMVs or encode stuff:
Uninstall all your codecs and crap, install CCCP, use MPC for playback, problem solved.
