I need idea's on how to make a certain visual effect work

Well I'm using adobe premiere (I have all the other staple programs like after effects) and I can't seem to find an effect that works for me. I want a face to fade into onto me current screen without effecting the rest of my video. I've tried blacking out everything but the face I want to fade in, then use a cross dissolve, but that darkens the rest of my original video too. So what effect is it? I've seen it done many times before so there must be a way I'm not thinking of.

Cut the face out of the video it's from in a different program, like Photoshop or After Effects. Then put it on top of the video you want it to fade in over.

You can also do color masking. Make the background color transparent and fade the face in. This generally gives poor results but it's quicker and easier.
