.mkv files

Post by Omega_Nemesis28 » Thu Dec 15, 2005 8:48 pm

I have video files that are .mkv files, for anime video. I can use it fine but I wanted to put the files on DVD but I beleive I have to convert before burning them.

Is there anyway to convert .mkv -> .avi
or
burn .mkv to DVD

i think mkv is just a container for avi +other files and you simply have to use virtual dub mod to extract the avi stream.

you can burn anything onto a dvd?

as for making a dvd movie theres a lot of info on the net.

I know how to burn a movie onto a DVD but I didn't know how with .mkv's lol.

I'll try that VD trick, the only thing is, in the .mkv files are 2 tracks - 1 English, 1 Japanease

How do I extract the sound I need?

(Mostly) fixed. If you're dealing with native ISO-MPEG4 or ISO-AVC, you can't even open them in VDubMod without dumping the raw .264 stream with mkvextract and then using avc2avi to put it in AVI, or processing it through AviSynth with a DirectShowSource script (which is the preferred method).

For the audio, you might be able to extract it using VDubMod if it's Vorbis, MP3, MP2, AC3, or WAV. If it's not any of those (read: most likely AAC), you need to use mkvextract to get it out and then decode it to WAV so you can use it.

With subtitles, you'll need to extract them from the MKV and then use a DVD authoring program capable of handling softsubs to author your disc (once you've encoded the video and audio into their proper formats).

Gah... .264 raw streams and avc2avi only applie to ISO-AVC files. For ISO-MPEG4, you still need to extract the raw (can't remember the extension), feed it through mp4box, then through MKVToolNix to put it back in MKV, and then finally you can extract the video out using VDubMod.
