if you're just annoyed about not being able to watch the videos, then try getting VLC Player, it plays almost every format there is.

Thanks! VLC works. But, I still wish I knew what was wrong with WMP, Winamp, and WMM.

I uninstalled ffdshow and media player started working again...

you most probably had codec clashing with each other. The FFdshow often tries to start up when you use WMM and makes it unstable at times so you did the right things.
