not getting high quality mp3 in virtualdub

i've got my video xvid encoded and want to compress my uncompressed audio into mp3. in virtualdub though the highest setting only gives about 64kbps(guesstimation based on the fact that 5 minutes song reduced to 2.5 meg mp3 audio stream). am i using an old version of virtualdub with less compression options?

You need to install (or choose) the Lame mp3 ACM codec. This codec comes with the amvapp or can be downloaded in various places online.
