Is it faster to use Vegas or VDub to convert the VOBs ? I haven't tried VDub, but Vegas seemed pretty fast to me - just for simple conversion to AVI (no effects, filters, etc.).
Ah, sorry for the delayed reply, I just checked back on this. What speeds are you geting when encoding ? And I simply use vdubmod because it takes alot less system resources than vegas, and I only ever convert small clips to huffyuv anyway, and vdubmod is faster when searching through them. Then again, most of my encoding is doen with Dr. Divx and divx5.2pro . It just makes it realy easy to back-up dvd's, and with my evil method of using crap quality divx files as source, it encodes at around 70fps, which is nicely fast.

No problem. I was just wondering if you had some idea. I've only used VOBs in one project and all I did was select pieces and render them out to AVI clips. It's my usual process; just a different way to get there. The rendering time wasn't any longer than usual.

you can use divx as source material and have very nice results, i admit to using mostly divx source. why because when i buy a dvd the first thing i do is back it up as an avi(divx 2pass 2500kbps)

nobody will notice unless they're anal about it, then again its just a hobby.
