Voice removal?

Post by nailz » Tue Jul 20, 2004 11:50 am

Does anyone have the ability to effectively remove vocals from a song? I tried using analogx's vocal remover for winamp, but it ends up taking a LOT of the sound out as well. Suggestions? If you can do it and are willing, please let me know.

The most effective method I know is to invert one of the channels, then convert both to mono and mix them, thereby removing anything that was recorded right in the center (usually vocals and sometimes bass as well). Actually, that's the ONLY method I know.

Problem is, this doesn't always work. It depends on the song.
In fact, I just found yesterday that it doesn't work with the recording I have of Aqua's "Barbie Girl", though it works much better (but not perfectly) with the Dutch parody "Neem een Ander in de Maling" by Ome Henk.

That method depends 100% on the group`s positioning when the song was recorded. The fact is, there`s no way to completely remove vocals without losing some other part of the song.

But I don`t know any method other than Scintilla`s.

You people are seriously overthinking all this. Just get the karaoke version of the song and the Winamp .cdg plugin. BOOM! Easy breezy.

That's assuming there is a karaoke version of the song.

Well I've got Aqua's "Barbie Girl", did nailz1000 ever say what he was looking for?

Seriously, unless you're talking about something REALLY off the wall like something from Jennie Lofgren or The Sounds (both foreign bands), yeah, there's a karaoke version of it...and even with off the wall bands you could probably STILL find a karaoke version if you looked hard enough, I'm just talking about what's widely available (through like Sunfly and other major karaoke companies).

We just get used to complicated solutions that we forget that there ARE things as easy as getting the karaoke version.
